British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he said. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
