The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters face the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
