Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Competitors will gain the option to contest certain decisions from the official, echoing the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
